INTERACTIVE MAP:
Rock Art in the Valley
of the Sun
This section
of GemLand
is devoted
to art
involving
rocks (other
than
jewelry).
Some of my
choices for
this section
may seem
rather
strange at
first, but
as the
saying goes,
"you had to
be there."
The unique map below shows the location of significant rock
gardens,
structures
employing
rock art,
museums, and
locations of
prehistoric
rock art in
the Phoenix
and
Scottsdale
areas. Explore the Map!Click
on names in
green
for some
views of
these
studies in
rock art.
These places
need to be
visited in
person in
order to
realize
their charm,
appeal, and
value as
expressions
of the ways
rocks
influence
us.
Some of them
are truly
amazing. If you
would like
to visit any
of the
private rock
gardens,
please
respect the
privacy of
the owners,
and call in
advance or
check their
hours of
operation.
Consult the
""
page if you
want more
information
on GemLand's
map projects
themselves.
You can switch between this map and the
prehistoric
(some 600
years ago)
map, or
the
map of the
Rocks of the
Valley of
the Sun.
The area shown above measures about 50 miles (80 km) West to East, by 40 miles (64km) North to South, and encompasses approximately 2000 square miles (5200 km).
Population (year 2010) of the Phoenix metropolitan area is estimated to be about 4.2 million. Towering sun-blasted rock formations and exotic cacti make the Valley a giant rock garden in its own right!
