This spiral petroglyph is one of the pieces of prehistoric
art on display along the pathway through the rock garden. Brethauer has a theory
that the number of circles within the spiral is related to the number of families that had
lived within the ancient associated settlement. If the rock with the spiral had been
placed near an ancient dwelling, then the number of circles signified the number of people
within the family.
I had not heard or read about this idea before. Maybe Gus is on to
something! Return to the map of "Rock Art in the Valley of
the Sun" for more view locations.
