He told me that he found this piece of
petrified wood along the Hassayampa River and speculated that it had been exposed to
"acid rain", as it was so deeply etched.
"This piece is very exceptionally good," he said. "It's
the only rock I ever found like that."
He gave it its own special place along the trail, on this pedestal.
I have visited with Gus a number of times now, and on one of those occasions
I wanted to take another photograph of a strangely surfaced piece of rock he had there.
I had recognized it the first time I saw it as a stromatolite, one of the
most ancient types of fossils known, but the photo had not come out well.
Neither he nor I could find it again. That's how overwhelming this
trail is, with its myriad of rocks and other objects!
Return to the map of "Rock Art in the Valley of
the Sun" for more view locations.
