A blue ceramic frog guards boulders filled
with from San Carlos, Arizona, about 100 miles (160km) east of Phoenix.
I recognized these rocks instantly, as I have been to the outcrop where they
were found. The green spots you see are actually cavities in the volcanic rock, and
are filled with crystals of the mineral olivine, the gem variety of which is
known in the jewelry trade as peridot.
These pieces contain no gem quality material, but make an interesting home
for the frog. Gus had "got them out of a rock shop down by a stone
yard". Note the petrified wood completing the scene. Return to the map of "Rock Art in the Valley of
the Sun" for more view locations.
