The Hidden Valley Trail provides fine views of Phoenix and the fabric of the rocks of South Mountain.  Platy rocks all along the trail are indicators of great stretching and doming forces during the .  The rock here is classified as , and one can even see evidence of its fabric on a small scale when pieces are broken open.
