In this view, Superstition Mountain (elevation 5057 feet,
1541 meters) rises above Apache Junction and Mesa in this southeasterly
looking view from Pass Mountain. It also shares the name "Superstition"
with the range of which it forms the western end. Well established in the lore of
the American Southwest, somewhere near this peak lies the legendary Lost Dutchman's
Gold.
However, the Superstitions are mostly composed of immense layers of
age volcanic ash, a rock which is essentially barren of gold and other metallic
minerals. In spite of that fact, over twenty people have died in one way or another
in the Wilderness, while searching for the mysterious mythical mine or cache.
A wild landscape of surrealistic rock formations, exotic cacti, and twisting canyons, it is one of metro Phoenix's most scenic hiking
areas.
