Behind the imposing stone and concrete
wall of Roosevelt Dam lies the largest artificial lake completely located within
Arizona -- Roosevelt Lake. The reservoir lies in a
broad valley, called the Tonto Basin (no relation that we know of to the Lone
Ranger's friend :-)), which lies between the Mazatzal Mountains,
and the wild Sierra Ancha.
Prehistorically, the basin was home to a people we call the Salado,
who built a number of cliff dwellings and villages in the area. Not too far away
from this dam (only about 6 miles, 10 km) is Tonto
National Monument, where you can visit some of the impressive ruins.
Continuing along the Apache Trail (SR88) to the east (behind the dam), you
will see the lake, pass the turnoff to the National Monument, and eventually come into the
picturesque copper-mining town of Globe.
