The Apache Trail (State Route
88) winds from Apache Junction to the Globe - Miami area, and includes some of central
Arizona's most scenic terrain, seen here from one of the viewpoints. This view,
looking northeast, shows some of the massive ash layers within the Tortilla Caldera,
part of the .
Part of the route is gravel, and it is not an old Apache Indian
road, but that doesn't prevent it from making a great day-trip from the Phoenix or
Scottsdale areas. There is not much in the way of civilization along the way, so
take food and water, and make sure you have enough fuel. Also, do not attempt this
road in a long or wide vehicle, or with a trailer -- you will see why when you get into
the middle of it!
