Here is one of the many piles of rocks with a story at
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow". Way back when, Gus met an old railroad man
who must have been equally taken with rocks. He made a deal with him, bought tons of
rocks of different types, and hauled them all to his property. There are small
mountains of different kinds of rocks everywhere here.
To me, it looked like this stone was derived from a volcanic area, due to the
zeolite minerals present. Zeolites are a group of minerals that occur in
strange, "bubbly-looking" formations, no doubt adding to their visual appeal.
Behind it is a complicated maze that Gus constructed out of all manner of
metal gates, grills, bars, wire, railings, and other miscellaneous pieces. He told
me that kids love to go through it when they come to tour the garden. Probably more
so than studying the zeolites.
