A collage of glass bottles and ceramic
vessels forms a colorful wall at the Lee Oriental Rock Garden. These containers were
once natural rock -- silica from which glass was produced. It was then transformed
by humans into objects of everyday life.
Now they are returned to the realm of rock. By combining them with
concrete, a man-made rock formation has come into being!
Rocks have traditionally been classified into three types: , ,
and .
But geologists are now starting to include a fourth type: anthropic --
rocks made by humans.
Anthropic rocks include structures big and small. This wall is very small
compared to highways and dams, and it is a jewel.
It's a mineral formation in its own right -- an organically formed mineral,
and Mr. Lee's Garden is a study in anthropic rocks. Return to the map of "Rock Art in the Valley of
the Sun" for more view locations.
