The Lee Oriental Rock Garden is not quite a
maze, but you can feel like it is when wandering through it because there is so much to
see. You easily forget from which direction you came, and can have no idea in which
direction you want to go! There is something to see at every turn and at every level
of view.
Just figuring out what you are looking at can be daunting. I spent
considerable time studying what appeared to be an enshrined panel surrounded by stones,
bottles, and other colorful decor.
Not wanting to touch it, I carefully considered the possibilities as to what
it might be. It looked like some kind of Asian Jackson Pollock work of art
-- patterns with inner detail that did not draw my eye to any central point or theme, but
actually widened my gaze. I knew I had discovered some new subtlety of Asian Art --
a kind of painting or etching I had never seen before.
After giving up, I asked Mr. Lee about its significance.
There was some pause. "It's a mirror," he said casually, and
walked over and smeared his finger across it. "Ah, dust," he remarked with a
smile as he showed me his fingertip.
Pollock obliterated.
