This part of the Hedgpeth Hills lies within Thunderbird
Park, a unit of the City of Glendale Parks and Recreation Department. There are
a number of hiking trails in the Park, and they provide some great panoramas of the
surrounding metropolitan area, as well as good views of dark
formations.
At the far eastern end of the hills is the Deer
Valley Rock Art Center, where there are over a thousand ancient petroglyphs inscribed
on basalt boulders. You can see good exposures of basalt at other places around the
Valley of the Sun, too, like Moon Hill.
