Rivers of asphalt parallel the Salt River (dry here, before the filling of the Tempe Town Lake), as it flows through Tempe.  This view looks east-northeast from Tempe Butte.  Turning around 180 to the southwest, the domed shape of the South Mountain rises above downtown Tempe.  Tempe Butte is a block of age and rocks, tilted away from South Mountain.
