This view looks south, deep into the Superstition Wilderness, from
near Canyon Lake, on the Salt River (Rio Salado). Pretty much everything you see
here is of volcanic origin -- the result of cataclysmic explosions during
time. White hot ash fell from the sky in multiple phases between approximately 25
million and 15 million years ago.
Fusing after falling into very hard rock, known as tuff or welded
tuff, the thick layers have weathered into the maze of canyons and gorges you see
here. Making your way through this landscape is not an easy thing.
