Here we are looking roughly northwest
into a scenic little canyon which contains Hackberry Spring. This part of
the Superstition Mountains offers a nice network of hiking trails, and they provide a wide
variety of spectacular views.
In this picture, you can see gently dipping (to the right) layers of rock
composed mainly of volcanic ash. At this point, the rocks are just inside the former
rim of the , which erupted
approximately 25 million years ago, devastating the region.
