Devil's Canyon displays a strange and rugged landscape along
its southern exposure, as seen from US Highway 60, between Miami / Globe and Superior,
Arizona.
The rocks which form these giant pinnacles were created by a series of
violent volcanic eruptions farther west in the Superstition Mountains, approximately 15
million years ago, during what is called the .
Few surface traces of the old, giant volcanic craters are left, but the
outlines of them can be reconstructed by geological evidence. Such structures are
called ,
and if one of these were active today, it would be referred to as a
"supervolcano".
US 60 is one of the more scenic routes in central Arizona. In the
Apache Junction / Phoenix metro area, it becomes the freeway known as the
"Superstition Freeway".
