Shaw Butte (2149 ft elevation,
655m) is a familiar sight from Interstate 17 (Black Canyon Freeway) when coming into the
Valley of the Sun from the north. Passing by just to its west means you have arrived
in Central Phoenix.
Mostly rock, it also shows layers of
overlying . This is
at the northwestern end of the -- the view is from North Mountain, looking northwest.
Perched on the promontory about halfway down the left slope in this scene are
the ruins of the Cloud Nine Restaurant, an old Phoenix dining
