Lying low on Camelback Mountain ,
in its northwest corner, is this giant cavern-like opening, or grotto. This place
was a ceremonial site, or sacred site, for the ancient Hohokam people who once lived in the Valley of
the Sun.
Rocks here (sandstone / conglomerate ) are mostly members of the middle
Tertiary
Camel's Head Formation, but some of the underlying Precambrian (~1.7 billion year old) granite
appears to be visible also.
Once within it, the ceiling hovers 40 or 50 feet (12m - 15m) over your head,
and the view to the north includes other peaks of the Phoenix Mountains , as well as some nearby
weirdly-shaped rocks.
You can read more about this place in my FREE, short
