The McDowell Mountains loom above central Scottsdale, Arizona, in this view looking northeast.

The McDowell Mountains loom above central Scottsdale in this northeasterly view from the summit of Camelback Mountain, separating Scottsdale from the community of Fountain Hills, located on the other side.  Formed from a variety of rocks, they are a result of faulting during time.  The rocks that make up these mountains also make up many of the other mountain ranges around Phoenix and in southern Arizona.
